Zinsco and Sylvania electrical panels

Zinsco panels (and some later branded as GTE-Sylvania / Sylvania) are another obsolete residential panel type Florida inspectors and insurers often flag. Breakers may have colored handles; the brand name appears on the panel deadfront or breakers.

Why they get flagged

Industry and insurance sources associate Zinsco-style equipment with breaker-to-bus connection problems and failure to trip under some conditions. There is no single federal recall that clears every Zinsco installation, and underwriting rules are set by each carrier.

The same Florida agency survey that highlighted FPE also reported that 22+ of 26 carriers it represents treat Zinsco / Sylvania as ineligible (WeShop Insurance). Challenger and Pushmatic are frequently mentioned in the same conversations.

Replacement, not breaker swaps

Licensed electricians typically recommend replacing the entire panel and breakers with a modern listed panel, not hunting for NOS Zinsco breakers. Ask quotes to include permit, inspection, and any grounding or meter-base work your jurisdiction requires.

Cost context

See our cost guide for published ranges. Florida write-ups often discuss roughly $2,000–$6,000 depending on amperage and whether the service is upgraded (Well Built Florida).
